Kentucky Derby Hat

My friend Jenelle: So I'm going to the Kentucky Derby.
Me: HOLY CRAP THAT'S AWESOME. Do you have a hat? (in my mind, you go to the derby BECAUSE you have a hat)
My friend Jenelle: Not yet, I just figured I'd buy one.

Hmmmm, yes. But we can do much, much better.
She brought over her store bought (and very cute) floppy brown hat. She had purchased a large feather bird, some berry sprigs and ombre wired ribbon. I'm Sesame Street Generation, so I believe two heads are always better than one...after brain storming together and some good ol' collaboration, this is what we came up with:

If you would like to learn how to make ribbon leaves, this blog has a good tutorial. The ombre gives such depth to the leaves...I just love it! And the french netting was left over from a veil project which turned out to be the perfect addition.
I think it turned out quite nicely! I'll be sure to post pics of her at the derby once she gets back!

Wise (and Completely Random) Recycling!

Chad (via cellphone from work): Hey sweetie, what are you doing this afternoon?
Meghan: I'm using our brand new iron to fuse together grocery bags and make them into a type of tyvek like fabric which I'm then going to make into a little stuffed owl.
Chad: ....pause.... Okay. I'll see you when I get home.

If you would like to learn how to make the "fabric" go here! A few quick tips...you need about 6-8 layers if you're using grocery bags...they're thinner and will still feel like grocery bags unless you really stack them up. Target bags and other retail stores only need about 4 - 5 layers.

Random craft? Yes! Completely. Regardless, he turned out kinda cute! See if you can spot the retailers!

Almost everyone I showed him to just kinda thought I was nuts. So imagine my delight when a friend saw him and fell in love....she took him last night and I'm glad he's found a nice home.

Chateau Tallulah

Martha Stewart is a genius. And I'm not one to idolize the "Women of Media" in this country....I truely believe that if Oprah, Rachel Ray and Katie Couric were ever in the same room, the world would implode. But if Martha was there, she would find something really pretty to make with the leftover shreds of humanity.

So when I saw this on MarthaStewart.com, I had to try it out. Below is a link for the tutorial and as most things Martha, it looks easier than it is. While the directions were simple, the actual cutting of the boxes, not so much. I found the windows to be tedious and mine looks more like a shanty than the Kitty Dream House pictured.

But I'm not done with it...I think I shall add some Victorian Era paint colors, window boxes and Voila: Painted Kitty. Tallulah seems to like it (we'll see after the catnip wears off)!
